Conclusions
Many sources cite that vocabulary and fluency are necessary for all readers to understand texts. Based on the data from the needs based assessment, I would assume that we as teachers are not collectively fighting to close the gap for our ELL students. We spend a significant portion of time working with decoding and reading words opposed to spending equally as much time between decoding and building background/vocabulary knowledge.
To answer my Creative Synthesis Question, "What strategies can I implement in order to impact the reading comprehension of ELL students? " : I need to focus on not only decoding, but vocabulary and fluency instruction. Each area is part of the puzzle to help all students, especially ELL grow to become great readers. There are tons of strategies such as repetition, choral reading, theater, context clues and many others that would positively impact the reading comprehension of ELL students. |
