Expression

Final ProductOur overall goal was to work on Eliana with reading comprehension by addressing fluency and vocabulary.
As a way to show all that Eliana had learned, she wrote and illustrated her own story. We included speech bubbles that represented the voice and the tone that the dialogue would be read in. For example, if the speaker was sad then the speech bubble was a rain drop. If the speaker was angry, the speech bubble was a lightening bolt. This allowed Eliana to show how expression increased her understanding of texts. |
Vocabulary
In order to work on Eliana's vocabulary knowledge, we decided to spend less time on word work and decoding words and more time on finding words in a text that Eliana would not know. Then we went over words and their meanings. Often Eliana and I would draw pictures that represent words. Once, we found the word 'merrily' and in order to make meaning we skipped merrily down the main hallway in her school.
Findings:
When my partner and I began working with Eliana, she was struggling to comprehend a text that was well below her grade level. Eliana did not need significant phonics instruction and therefore we focused more on vocabulary, fluency and self monitoring, By focusing on this aspects, by the time our practicum course ended, Eliana was reading and comprehending texts on her grade level.
